Let’s talk about our favourite things at the Saskatoon Zoo. If you have read my previous blogs, you may know I have a thing for the lemurs and meerkats, but I have a true soft spot for the prairie dogs.  One of my friends says her favourites at the Saskatoon Zoo are the Prairie Butterfly House and the zebras. Another friend leans more toward the avian residents – the owls and eagles.

My favourite discovery from my last visit would be how accessible everything is. I hadn’t realized that there are a few complimentary wheelchairs available, if someone doesn’t feel they can walk the distance. Another option is mobility scooters, on a first-come, first-served basis. And for families, there are $5 wagon rentals. They are also on a first-come, first served basis. The Zoo has an accessible playground and at the Prairie Marsh exhibit, an accessible pier.

This is the last month of the season for the Prairie Butterfly House, which is colourful inside and out.

Seeing the garden zone outside the Butterfuly House brings up another point. I marvel at the natural and the groomed gardens and foliage during each Zoo visit.

I’m also marvelling at the length of this lemur’s tail. Each ring-tailed lemur has 13 alternating black and white bands on its tail. I had a hard time fitting it all in the picture!

If you have family and/or friends coming for a visit, add the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park and Zoo to your list. And if you appreciate what the Zoo is trying to do, donations can be made to the Saskatoon Zoo Foundation. Its mission is to connect people to nature while promoting wildlife education, conservation and research.
